What is DLL hell Problem? (Views: 1871)

Dll hell is the problem of versioning. it is a set of problems caused when multiple applications attempt to share a common component like the DLL or a COM class. In the most typical case, one application will install a new version of the shared component that is not backward compatible with the version already on the machine. Although the application that has just been installed works fine, existing applications that depended on a previous version of the shared component might no longer work. The reason for these issues is that version information about the different components of an application aren't recorded or enforced by the system. this issue is resolved by introducing the concept of strong names which is generated by the GAC for all the components installed on that machine.

In computing, DLL Hell is a term for the complications that arise when working with dynamic link libraries (DLLs) used with Microsoft Windows operating systems,[1] particularly legacy 16-bit editions which all run in a single memory space. While the phrase is Windows-specific and a derivation of the general cross-platform phrase "dependency hell", the rhyme "DLL hell" makes its use popular for discussing a general Windows-related dependency hell case.
